3 Ways to Connect This Fall

Every year as the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, we all have the urge to go inward a little—toward our families, toward our homes, toward the things that make us feel safe and warm. Well, this year is different (to say the least). We still want to feel that connection with those we love, but inside our homes may not be the safest place to gather with some of our favorite people. So even as that autumn chill starts to nip at our noses, we’re looking for ways to visit with friends and family in the great outdoors.

If you’re craving some safe, socially-distanced hangs with friends this autumn and winter, warmth will be key. Just like humans have done since the dawn of time, we can gather around a fire. Maybe you’re lucky enough to have plenty of space (and fuel) for bonfires, but if not, what about a backyard fire pit? Building your own isn’t too tough, and doesn’t have to cost much at all. Check out these creative ideas and get inspired!

Another favorite way to stay warm in the colder months? Get moving! Hiking, boating, and mountain biking are all fantastic ways both to connect with your people in a socially distant way, and do your body a favor. And if you happen to need a new backpack, a fresh pair of boots, or any other gear for your wilderness adventures, take the opportunity to shop local—two of our favorite gear shops are High Tor Gear Exchange in Charlottesville or Rockfish Gap Outfitters in Waynesboro. Small and family-owned businesses will be extra grateful for your support this year.

Craving a more extended hang? After determining your “Covid compatability” with prospective adventure partners, camping trips with a small crew are a great way to bond more deeply with family and friends. You can be entirely outside, and a campfire can easily separate groups by the requisite six feet or more. If you’re new to camping, there’s a wealth of information available online to take the intimidation factor out of it. If you’re a more seasoned camper, try getting off the beaten path and exploring parts of your area local you’ve never seen. Some of our favorites this year? Craig County for its acres of national forest and miles of hiking trails, and Stokesville Campground with its old-school vibe and family-friendly mountain biking trails. We can hardly believe we grew up exploring around here and had never been to these amazing places, but this fall we’ve gotten to discover them with some of our dearest friends.

For us at Blue Ridge Bucha, gratitude and community are always important. In this month of giving thanks, we are expressing our gratitude toward the great outdoors, and some of the folks who work to protect it, by donating 50% of all November proceeds from our seasonal flavor, Cherry Root, to Wild Virginia’s work on clean water. Based in Charlottesville, Wild Virginia is a non-profit organization that works to protect waterways and wildlife in our beautiful state. A vital mission indeed!

Speaking of our seasonal flavor, have we mentioned it’s one of our favorite fall brews of all time? Cherry Root is a delicious flavor that smoothly blends the creamy notes of sarsaparilla root with the deep flavor of black cherry, and you can find it our taproom, or at a number of retail partners that carry our kombucha on draft. Be sure to call ahead to verify open hours (Covid has brought some changes), and bring in your growlers to get your fill while supplies last! Whether it’s Cherry Root or another flavor you love, we hope you’ll take some bucha along on your adventures this fall—and please stay warm and safe!
